Elul Jewish tradition encourages 40 days of introspection and self-reflection prior to Yom Kippur. During these 40 days leading up to Yom Kippur we are to do the hard work of cheshbon hanefesh (literally “an accounting of the soul”). This year the first day of the Hebrew month of Elul begins Tuesday September 3.
